Alexander Fulton Mini Park

Operated by the city's Department of Parks and Recreation, Alexander Fulton Mini Park is located right in the heart of downtown Alexandria. This part is ideal for those who want a nearby urban gathering space that's not too far from city limits.

The location of this park is perfect for casual outdoor lunches, reading a good book outside, or simply just relaxing. Raised turf panels in a corner plaza area are designated for small live music concerts, parties, and other outdoor gatherings.

Compton Park

Located near Pecan Grove Apartments, Compton Park is one of the crown jewels of the city's park system and features large walking trail loops accompanied by signage that explains the area and local plant life. The path is illuminated at night which makes it an excellent place to get some fresh air and exercise any time of the day.

Low, decorative masonry walls protect the beautiful, green grassy areas from vehicle damage. The grassy park lawns also include an assortment of fun playground structures, trash cans, and benches where visitors can rest and relax. Restrooms are available here for patrons of the park.

One of the trails in Compton Park features a unique observation deck. Visitors can come and stand on the observation deck to look out over the native wetlands in the area and enjoy everything that being outdoors in Alexandria has to offer.

This park is also pet-friendly as long as dogs are vaccinated and remain on a leash at all times. A large hill in the park is a perfect spot for sledding in the wintertime.

Chicot State Park

One of many state parks in Louisiana, Chicot State Park is located just outside of Alexandria in the south-central part of the state. This park spans over 6,400 acres featuring beautiful rolling hills and the cool, clear waters of Lake Chicot. Many people come here to fish for crappie, largemouth bass, and other species and enjoy the convenience of three boat launches, a boathouse, and three boat rental facilities.

Chicot State Park offers an extensive backpacking and hiking trail that surrounds the lake as well as several campsites throughout. A large part of the trail is designated for mountain bikers, but cyclists of all kinds are welcome.

On the North Landing, you'll find a boat launch and dock, another fishing pier, a group camp area, and several smaller campsites. Lodges are also available for rent here.

Hynson Bark Dog Park

Plenty of fresh water is available to keep pooches cool and hydrated, but it's important to note that there are no public restrooms here.

Pet owners and their pets may visit from sunrise to sunset. The dog park is divided into two sections with one for larger dogs weighing over 35 pounds and one for smaller dogs weighing less than 35 pounds. All dogs must be on a leash when entering and exiting the park and wear a current rabies vaccination tag.

If you visit, note that no female dogs in heat or puppies under four months old are allowed. All pets must be up to date on their vaccinations, and handlers must be 16 years of age and older. Pet owners are expected to clean up after their dogs, and the park includes pick-up stations with gloves.

The park features several trees for shade as well as several picnic benches so pet owners can stop and rest or simply relax as they watch their pets play and socialize. Much of the dog park is covered with grass so it's gentle on sensitive paws.
