Spanning over 33 acres in Alexandria’s historic Bringhurst City Park, Alexandria Zoological Park features more than 500 animals across dozens of species. The Zoo is home to four themed habitat areas including the African Experience, Louisiana Habitat, Land of the Jaguar and Asia, featuring a wide variety of native and exotic fauna. From humble beginnings in 1926, the AZA-accredited Park continues to expand and has become a regional treasure.

 

Throughout the year, the Zoo hosts community events such as an annual Mardi Gras party, Zoo Brew, Zoo Boo, Holiday Light Safari, and Party for the Planet. Park facilities are also available to rent for birthday parties and other private gatherings. Elsewhere in Bringhurst Park, hone your short game at the oldest par 3 golf course in the United States, serve up an ace at Alexandria Tennis Complex, or watch the kids play at the playground and splash pad!

2. Kent Plantation House

Erected in the year 1800, Kent House Plantation is the oldest surviving structure in the Central Louisiana region. The beautifully-restored bousillage French Colonial house and 4-acre grounds now provide insight into plantation life from the late 18th century up to the Civil War period. Visitors are invited to tour the home and a number of fascinating out buildings including a milk house, kitchen, blacksmith shop, slave quarters, sugar cane syrup-making facility, and much more!

 

In historic downtown Alexandria near the Red River, the Louisiana History Museum features exhibits and artifacts showcasing the history of Alexandria, Rapides Parish, and the Central Louisiana region. Built in 1907, the Museum is housed in the former Alexandria Public Library. From Native American roots, through Spanish, French, and English colonial periods, the Civil War, and in to the modern day, the Museum’s exhibits touch on geography, art, agriculture, politics, war, and much more.

3. Alexandria Museum of Art

Located in the circa-19th century Rapides Bank & Trust Building, the Alexandria Museum of Art features permanent collections of paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and much more. Throughout the year, rotating traveling exhibits visit the museum and the AMOA also hosts art workshops, LSU-Alexandria classes, and other community events. The Museum opened in 1977 and has since expanded to include the Grand Foyer overlooking the Red River.

 

Just down the road, River Oaks Square Arts Center serves as a cultural hub for the Central Louisiana region, offering a wide range of educational programs, and studio and gallery space for local artists to create and display their works. For younger artists, the nearby T.R.E.E. house children’s museum fosters appreciation of the arts in Alexandria’s next generation, with the Summer Art Program and spaces to display their budding talents!

4. Rapides Parish Coliseum

With a capacity of up to 10,000, Rapides Parish Coliseum on the western outskirts of town has been hosting concerts, sporting contests, tradeshows, conventions, and other events since 1965. Over the years, the Coliseum has hosted WWE wrestling matches, monster truck rallies, concerts from the likes of Elvis Presley, and speakers such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Ronald Reagan. An adjacent 23,000 square-foot exhibition hall frequently hosts trade shows.

 

Cenla Events Center, Alexandria Riverfront Amphitheater, Couglin Saunders Performing Arts Center, and Randolph Riverfront Center play host to concerts and other community events and entertainment. Live music is also available at a number of bars and restaurants throughout the city. For sports fans, the Louisiana State University – Alexandria Generals compete in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and tennis, with contests held at venues across the city.

5. Indian Creek Lake and Recreation Area

Spanning more than 2,600 acres in Alexander State Forest, Indian Creek Reservoir and Recreation area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts looking to commune with nature.  Boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking and paddle boarding are available for water sports enthusiasts, while a network of hiking trails, beaches, and campgrounds are available for the land lovers. The lake also features excellent fishing for catfish, bluegill, crappie and bass.

 

Within a short distance from the city, Catahoula Lake, Saline Lake, Kincaid Reservoir, Cotile Lake, Lake Rodemacher, Lake Iatt, and the Red River provide additional opportunities for excellent fishing and outdoor recreation.
